Count the hard surfaces in your flat and you will reach a tidy number fairly quickly. Floors, worktops, the dining table, the windows, the top of the fridge. You know how to clean every one of them, and you know when you have finished, because a wipe either lifts the mark or it does not.
Now count the fabric. The sofa and the cushions on it. The curtains, and the sheers behind the curtains. The rug. The mattress, the pillows, the bolster, the fabric headboard. The dining chair pads. The throw over the armchair that has not moved since the day you bought it. It comes to roughly half of everything in the room — and almost none of it answers to a wipe, because fabric does not hold dirt on its surface. It takes it in and keeps it.
Which is a slightly uncomfortable thought, and also a very easy one to act on. Walk the flat with it in mind and the route more or less sets itself.
The sofa is doing more work than anything else you own. It collects skin, hair, crumbs, aircon dust and, in a humid flat, a steady amount of moisture, all of it pressed a little deeper into the weave every time somebody drops onto it. None of that shows for a long while, and then one day the arm rests look a different colour from the back.
The easy half you can do this afternoon. Lift the seat cushions right out, vacuum the base and the crevices with the upholstery nozzle, turn the cushions over, and put every zipped cover and the throw straight into the wash. While you are down there, deal with the rug underneath: vacuum both sides, because the grit that wears the pile down sits on the floor side where nobody looks.

A curtain is an enormous air filter that nobody ever changes. Everything that comes in through an open window in Singapore — corridor dust, road grit, the neighbour's cooking, whatever the last downpour kicked up off the ground — passes through that fabric and some of it stays. Sheers are the worst offenders, because they go from white to a faint grey-yellow so gradually that you genuinely cannot see it happening.
There is a quick test. Take one panel down, wash it, hang it back up next to its untouched neighbour, and look at the pair in daylight. Most people only need to do this once. The curtains near the kitchen and the ones in the room with the window that is always open will be noticeably worse than the rest.
In the bedroom there is barely anything that is not soft. Sheets and pillowcases you already wash. The things underneath them are the ones that get forgotten: the pillows themselves, the bolster, the mattress protector, the fabric headboard your hair has been resting against every night for three years.
Strip the lot back to bare mattress on your next free morning. Wash the protector. Put the pillows out in moving air if you can, and look at them properly while they are off the bed — yellowing, flattening and a faint musty smell are all the same story, which is moisture that never fully left.

This is the line that decides your weekend. Roughly, the washable pile is anything with a zip, a tie or a removable cover:
And then there is everything that cannot come apart: the sofa's foam core, the mattress, the fabric headboard, the fixed upholstery on dining chairs, and any rug with a backing or a pile deep enough to hold water. These do not need a wash so much as a proper extraction — water and solution worked in, then pulled back out with the soil in it, and dried fast enough that the humidity does not undo the whole exercise. That is the half worth handing over, and it is exactly what sofa and mattress cleaning and carpet cleaning are for.
You do not have to do the whole flat. Pick the room you sit in most, strip everything soft in it, and run the washable half through the machine while you vacuum the rest. It is a genuinely satisfying afternoon, and it tells you quickly which pieces have gone past what a home machine can reach.
For those, our teams handle the deep end — deep cleaning for a whole-home reset, or housekeeping services if you would rather the soft things simply stopped being your problem. Whenever you are ready, you can book your next clean in a couple of minutes.
