Slide your balcony door open and pay attention to the sound it makes. If it glides, lovely. If it grinds — that low gritty rasp, like something very small being crushed — the door is not complaining about its age. That noise is sand.
Every flat here has a few narrow channels running along its floors and window ledges, and they are the hardest-working, least-loved surfaces in the home. They catch everything: corridor dust, construction grit, hair, sideways rain, the occasional grain of rice. Then a heavy door rolls over the lot, twice a day, grinding it into paste. Ten minutes and a stiff old toothbrush will fix most of it. Here is the order to do it in.
Before you clean anything, open and close every sliding thing you own — the balcony door, the bedroom windows, the wardrobe if it slides, the insect screen. You are listening for three things: a grinding rasp, a door that needs a shove to get moving, and a door that seems to lift slightly as it travels. All three point at the same place, and it is not the handle.
Then look down. In good light, run a fingertip along the groove. Most people are genuinely startled by what comes up.
The instinct is to squirt something in and wipe. Resist it. Water turns loose grit into mud, and mud packs itself into precisely the corners you cannot reach, which is how a track that was merely dirty becomes a track that is blocked.
Go dry first. Run a vacuum crevice tool along the full length of the channel, then work a stiff dry brush along the groove — an old toothbrush is almost exactly the right width — to lift what the vacuum skated over. Vacuum a second time. Only once the channel is dry and empty should a damp microfibre cloth go anywhere near it.
A track is easy in the middle and horrible at the ends. The last few centimetres at either end are where the rollers park when the door is fully open or fully shut — and they are also where everything you have just swept along ends up.
Wrap a damp cloth around the tip of a butter knife and push it into the corner, working it back and forth. Easier still: slide the door to the halfway point so both ends are exposed, clean one end properly, then slide it across and do the other. This step is unglamorous and it is the one you will hear the difference from.
If you have an insect screen, it runs in its own shallow channel just in front of or behind the main one, and it is usually filthier, because nobody ever looks at it. Same routine, same order: dry, brush, vacuum, damp cloth.
Window tracks are worse again, because rain reaches them. While you are there, check the small drainage holes along the bottom of the window frame — they are about the size of a grain of rice, they block easily, and a blocked one leaves a shallow puddle sitting in the frame for days at a time.
Some of what you find will not brush out. Black speckling along the rubber seal, and in the silicone where the frame meets the floor, is usually growth rather than dirt — which is why it reappears a fortnight after a good wipe.
